Overview
El Hierro is 268 km² of young island (~1.1 million years old) dominated by a collapsed caldera — El Golfo — which formed a spectacular arc of cliffs. The twisted junipers of El Sabinar, sculpted by centuries of wind, are one of the Canary Islands' most iconic images.
The coast is a string of natural rock pools — Charco Azul, La Maceta, Tacorón — formed by lava flows meeting the Atlantic. Orchilla lighthouse, at the westernmost tip, marked the prime meridian of the known world for centuries.
For shoots seeking extreme isolation, zero visual contamination, primeval landscapes or narratives about the edge of the world, El Hierro is the natural destination. Access by ferry from Tenerife or inter-island flights from TFN.
